NOTES: 2/18/09

TINKER STANDARD (does not support):
-Unlawful speech (i.g. sending death threats to the president)
-Physically disruptive speech (i.g. confederate flag on school grounds)

FRASER STANDARD:
-School President that talked about sexual induendos (spelling?)

FREDRICK STANDARD:
-Princpal cancelled school for reglious protests on school property.
-"Bong Hits 4 Jesus"

YOUR RIGHTS OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL:
-"There is no legal justification for censoring a students expession in the privacy of his own home."
-can publish a newspaper a pass it out as long as it's not on school property, as long as it doesn't have lible or slander things that are not illigal. same with a blog.
-more rights a person outside of school

THREE TYPES OF STUDENT WEB SITES:
-sites that are offensive, obnoxious and insulting
-sites that are offensive, obnoxious and insulting, and also contain some sort of veiled threat of violence or of destruction of property
-sites that contain outright blatant threat (post Columbine)

LIBLE (An Oversimplified Definition):
Publication of a false statement of fact that seriously harms someone's reputation.
- Publication: articles, headlines, photo captions, etc.


THE CATCH:
Knowing something is true and proving it's true can be two different things (sucks, right?)

Definition:
Define “Journalism” in 1-3 sentences.
-Current events that are news worthy. They are published or boardcasted to an audience. Lets people know what goes on in everyday life.


List and describe the six criteria of newsworthiness.

4. Prominence - People - Celebreities

What are the advantages of print journalism?
1. More conrol over what news you get
2. It's there forever....sorta
3. More in depth


What are the advantages of broadcast journalism?
1. More up to date
2. Better connection with the aduience
3. Easier to change information


Why has online journalism (convergent media) become so popular?
It's the best of both worlds. It's free, it's more in depth, it's super conveinent, it's constantly updated, and you can print it out and show to your friends!

Super Bowl Ads

Commercial Analysis: The horse shows off.
Company: Budwiser.
Target Audience: Adults 21+
What persuasive method used (humor, action, celebrity, human interest, etc.)? Humor.
How were camera shots and editing used to enhance the message? The horse being a leader?
What is the slogan/message for the company? "A Great American Leader"
Was the message effective? Why or why not? Yes. Alot of people liked this commerical.

Commercial Analysis: Gives man super powers.
Company: Doritos.
Target Audience: All ages & genders.
What persuasive method used (humor, action, celebrity, human interest, etc.)? Humor.
How were camera shots and editing used to enhance the message? The man eats a chip and gets money and womens clothes to fly off.
What is the slogan/message for the company? Doritos are that good.
Was the message effective? Why or why not? Yes. many people like Doritos and this commerical.

Commercial Analysis: Man courts girl for date.
Company: Taco Bell.
Target Audience: All ages and gender.
What persuasive method used (humor, action, celebrity, human interest, etc.)? Humor.
How were camera shots and editing used to enhance the message? Man is fast with food.
What is the slogan/message for the company? "Taco Bell. Think outside the box"
Was the message effective? Why or why not? Yes. The ratings where high.

Commercial Analysis: Guy visited by Death.
Company: H&R Block.
Target Audience: Tax Payer's.
What persuasive method used (humor, action, celebrity, human interest, etc.)? Humor.
How were camera shots and editing used to enhance the message? The thunder & fog.
What is the slogan/message for the company? "I've got perople"
Was the message effective? Why or why not? Yes. It had an average rating.

Commercial Analysis: Guy uses skiing & other skiiers as an example of drinkability.
Company: Bud Light.
Target Audience: Adults 21+
What persuasive method used (humor, action, celebrity, human interest, etc.)? Humor.
How were camera shots and editing used to enhance the message? Drawings to explain drinkability.
What is the slogan/message for the company? "The difference is drinkability"
Was the message effective? Why or why not? Yes. People like Bud Light.
